According to Park and Associates, Cloud DVR will grow from the 18 million subscribing households reported in 2016, to almost triple that number in 2020, with 42 million4
Live TV streaming in cloud-based infrastructure posts challenges to multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs) in offering features, such as Pause-Live-TV (PLTV), that the viewers still love in traditional DVRs. When everybody is pausing and rewinding the video at the same time during a sporting event, a network surge is created, causing congestion from streaming broadcast/multicast videos to delivering unicast video streams to each of the subscribers.
Caching at the set-top boxes (STBs), using embedded or removable NAND flash, enables buffering the video to support PLTV locally without going all the way back to the cloud. Removable flash can also be used for local VoD library and lite DVR application for TV or satellite services with lack of broadband return path capability.
