Automotive & Transportation: Data Fuels the Future

HOW DATA DISRUPTS

Data Disrupts Auto & Transportation Industries

The automotive and transportation industries are on the cusp of a disruptive technology phase. Vehicles are not simply mechanical engines but are now data centers on wheels, driving a new generation of storage infrastructure needs. As cars become connected and autonomous, massive amounts of data are being created and consumed. This requires new approaches in data processing that improve communications and interactions between humans and vehicles, vehicles and vehicles (V2V), and vehicles and infrastructures (V2I), while enabling a better and safer driving experience. This places massive demands on data storage and processing at the edge while pushing the boundaries of cloud-based services in the core.

1TB by 2022

It is expected that a single autonomous car will have up to 1TB of storage by 20221

24.4% by 2022

Connected car penetration is at 10.4% in 2018 and expected to hit 24.4% in 20222

When buying a car today, it is the whole technology package that interests a buyer, not just the engine and mechanical components. Over the last 20 years, the number of electronic control units in the car has grown dramatically, controlling everything; from the drivetrain and emissions to door locks, climate control and suspension and this trend continues as the industry moves towards electric and hybrid vehicles.

FUELING AN INDUSTRY WITH DATA

Data Fuels the Future of Automotive and Transportation

The automotive and transportation industries are investing in new data center infrastructures and edge technologies that extract immediate intelligence from captured data, not only to enhance the driving experience, but to also make it safer. This creates a need for new storage, and network and computing infrastructures that combine cloud services with in-car computing power to handle the massive amounts of data collected by connected cars.

Connected cars and autonomous driving technologies are driving incredible value for the automotive industry and have attracted significant investments to “auto tech” in both the private and public markets. Concomitant with this growth is a fundamental shift in the data platforms used to support connected car applications because of their unique requirements. If we look at connected cars and autonomous driving as the next killer app, we can learn from the platform shifts that they are precipitating as harbingers of even greater movements to come.
